TikTok has surpassed Google as the most popular website on the internet.

Cloudflare, an information technology security business, reports that the viral video app obtains more hits than the American search engine.

TikTok dethroned Google in February, March, and June of this year and has retained the top spot since August, according to the rankings.

Google was top last year, followed by TikTok, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, and Netflix. Cloudflare stated that it tracks data using its web traffic monitoring tool, Cloudflare Radar.

One of the reasons for Tiktok’s popularity spike is considered to be the Covid epidemic, as lockdowns kept people at home and looking for amusement.

According to data provider Sensor Tower, TikTok had been downloaded more than three billion times as of July this year.

The social network, which is owned by a Chinese company named Bytedance, already has more than one billion active users worldwide and is growing at a rapid pace.

To comply with China’s censorship laws, the app is dubbed Douyin and operates on a separate network.

Douyin debuted in September 2016. China decided this year to prohibit users under the age of 14 to 40 minutes each day on the platform.
